On 6th May Greece is running elections involved in a big financial crisis
and governed, so far, by a coallition Government led by the technocrat Lukas
Papademos. The public debt (160% GDP) is being the main Achilles heel, but one
must not forget the important austerity measures applied, whose effects are
already seen in the society. The unemployment rate has rised up to almost 22%,
wages are getting lower, and prices higher which makes a vicious circle of much
less consumerism and redundancies.
Thus, the new Government will have to be kind with Brussels, and the troika
and follow the agreements already signed, but it should not stop taking into
account what the public opinion thinks and feels. Precisely, this is one of the
reasons that is many experts considers to explain a potential rising of

El 6 de mayo
Grecia celebrará elecciones envuelta en una gran crisis financiera y gobernada,
hasta el momento, por un Gobierno de coalición liderado por el tecnócrata Lukas
Papademos. La deuda pública (160% del PIB) está siendo el principal talón de
Aquiles, pero no se deben olvidar las fuertes medidas de austeridad aplicadas,
cuyos efectos ya se están viendo en la sociedad. La tasa de desempleo ha subido
hasta casi el 22%, los salarios son cada vez más bajos y los precios suben, lo
que ha creado un círculo vicioso de mucho menos consumo y cierre de negocios.
Así, el nuevo Gobierno tendrá que mantener unas buenas relaciones con Bruselas y la troika, y seguir los acuerdos ya firmados, pero no debería dejar de tener en cuenta lo que la opinión pública piensa y siente. Precisamente, esta es de las razones que muchos expertos destacan para explicar un posible ascento de los partidos extremistas.
