MARRUECOS.

MOROCCO. 'Atay', the Moroccan tea to toast for cultural values

"The first glass is as gentle as life
The second one is as strong as love
The third one is as bitter as death" (Maghrebi proverb)

Mint tea is specially consumed in summer
Atay or Moroccan tea is a traditional and a central element within the social life of the Maghrebi countries. It is so enrooted in the daily routine that one could barely understand key aspects and habits of this area without a proper approach to it. Indeed, it trascends the fact of being a mere drink to become a sort of symbol of a wide range of core values in this particular culture.

PANGEA => ISLAM 16/07/2015 (English version)

Pangea focused its radio show dating 16/07/2015 on Islam. Due to some technical problems, the broadcasting cannot be shared nor played. What follows is a summary of what was spoken that day.
This text pretends to approach the meaning and main values of this religion, to explain its significance and what it is after, and specially to clarify misgivings and to erode misunderstandings wrongly leading to prejudicies and strong stereotypes negatively affecting everyone. This is not a thesis about Islam. It is just a text serving as an approach for a better comprehension of it.
For its writing, it counts on the comments and words of Sarfraz and Abdessamad (our guests in the studio) as well as guiding through the book What is Islam?, by Ghaleb Bencheikh.

BELGIUM. BEER AS A SYMBOL OF UNION

Seppe holding  a Kwak
"Serving and drinking Heineken in Belgium is a shame. It is considered kattenpis (cat's urine) for us. The Netherlands are very good in many fields, but they cannot compare their beers with ours. We do know how to make them". Seppe de Landtsheer has just made clear how relevant this product is for his country. Indeed beer goes beyond being a simple alcoholic drink in Belgium. It plays a major role in keeping the nation united and together.

With a very strong regional identity, this Benelux-state finds itself politically, culturally, economically and lingüistically divided among the industrial, rich, Flemish/Dutch-speaking area of Flanders in the North; the more unemployed, French-speaking zone of Wallonia in the South; and the German-speaking region in the East. Brussels, meanwhile, resists as the bilingual, neutral, mainly Walloon-populated capital, located in Flemish territory. Such is the rift that several are and have been the separatists attempts, solid the support of nationalists movements -basically in Flanders- and instable the political sphere. In fact, Belgium recorded the longest time without a constituted government after elections (589 days).

LUSOPHONE WORLD. Saudade, present melancholy from a nostalgia of the past and a hope in the future

If you insist in knowing what saudade is you will have to know first and foremost; feel what loving is; what kindness is; have a pure love forever; live. After this you will understand what saudade is about. After losing that love saudade is loneliness, melancholy. It is distance. It is remembering. It is suffering”.

Saudade is a concept as enrooted in the Lusophone (and Galician) culture as hard to explain. The Dicionário Houaiss da lingua portuguesa defines it as “a somewhat melancholic feeling of incompleteness. It is related to thinking back on situations of privation due to the absence of someone or something, to move away from a place or thing, or to the absence of a set of particular and desirable experiences and pleasures once lived”. Miguel Falabella is more concise and straight to the point. For him it is “the nostalgia derived from a lack of knowing”.

SENEGAL. Teranga, hospitalidad 'made in Senegal'

Mamadou (i.) y Abdoulaye (d.)

SENEGAL. Teranga, hospitality 'made in Senegal'

Mamadou (l.) and Abdoulaye (r.)
One for all and all for one”. No, I do not mean the famous quote of Alexandre Dumas’ novel ‘The Three Musketeers’. This is how Abdoulaye and Mamadou summarize the essence of, probably, the most representative element of the culture of their country: the Senegalese Teranga.

Teranga literally means hospitality in Wolof, a language of this West African nation, but it goes beyond the simple and courteous one that we may find all over the world. It is more than art; it is a way of life. It is the spirit of camaraderie, tolerance, and acceptance of one another. “It is not a legend, but an attitude put in practice through daily evidences”, both of them agree to say.

A major proof of this behaviour can be observed in several traditions around food. The typical African mode of eating is a good representation. People gather in a circle and a big pot is put in the middle; then one by one, almost coordinated, stretch their arms to get a ration. No boundaries. All the meal is shared by everyone. Likewise, another sign in this same direction is the fact that one can go inside any house, or the own people invite passers-by to join them.

BURKINA FASO.

BURKINA FASO. Help and cooperation as a channel to know Burkina Faso

Bazier, President of the Association
There are lots of ways to know a country. Those people who have money, time and chances can go directly and get immersed in the culture, traditions and particulars it has to offer. Some prefer to rely on a tour guide that shows the surface of the destination. Some others would like either manner but…there are no instruments. Well, then we should add a new one, especially for the latter ones. A lovely alternative that links the Spanish city of León and the African continent, specifically Burkina Faso.

Mr. Yiboula Bazier Emmanuel leads the HumanitarianAssociation of Help and Cooperation for Development for Burkina Faso, an initiative that was born two years ago with the purpose of approaching and getting to know his country to Spaniards by means of setting projects to improve the situation there. “Many people used to ask me about my fatherland, were curious about our costumes, had lots of stereotypes and a lack of knowledge about Burkina too. That is why a group of friends came out with this idea, thus reaching two aims at the same time: help the nation and spread the wide range of things it has to share”, he explains.

EURO CRISIS

The Nobel of Economics affirms that “the fiscal integration has to go beyond just punishing countries with big deficits”

Chris Sims suggests its mixture with some transfer resources from rich to poor at bad times

FERNANDO GUTIÉRREZ CHICO, STOCKHOLM
The complete integration of the Economic Monetarian Union (EMU) should not only penalize countries when they are down, but show its strong support in times of stress. This is the main idea about a potential future of the Eurozone reasoned by the 2011 Nobel Prize in Economics, Christopher Sims (Washington DC, 1942), in an interview with Mundonoticiass.

BÉLGICA: CUESTIÓN DE ESTADO

Archivo:Belgium.geohive.gif
